The MS degree program at the Sir Syed CASE Institute of Technology is designed to give candidates advanced coursework in microbiology and an in-depth introduction to microbiology research. Students are expected to design and execute original research projects using traditional and advanced research technologies. We strive to provide each Master’s student with broad knowledge microbiology and in depth knowledge in their area of specialization such that they can enter the workforce as professional microbiologists or continue their academic training in advanced graduate or professional programs.

Objectives

The Master study program “Microbiology” builds consecutively on a biological education and is focussed on research. A good scientific basic education in a Bachelor study program enables enrolled students in the Master program to independent scientific work in a modern interdisciplinary scientific field. The study program is especially dedicated to the integration and consolidation of knowledge in microbiology. The microbiology degree program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of key disciplines including microbial structure, microbial genetics, immunology and microbial pathogenesis. Through focused coursework students develop a robust foundation in the principles underlying medical microbiology, environmental microbiology, agricultural microbiology and industrial microbiology. The overarching objective of the department is to equip students with both breadth and depth of knowledge in microbiology, immunology, and molecular genetics. For graduate students, the program offers specialized training in independent study and research, preparing them for innovative careers in fields ranging from medical research to recombinant DNA research. By fostering critical thinking, analytical skills, and hands-on laboratory experience, the program aims to cultivate a new generation of scientists capable of addressing complex challenges in microbiology and related disciplines.

Scope of the Program

Microorganisms are of outstanding importance for applications in the field of biotechnology (high cell density fermentation, “quorum sensing” for the production of agents), environmental protection (elimination of pollutants), agriculture (increase of yield and tolerance towards stress), medicine (anti infectives) as well as in general biology (as model systems).
In addition, use of microbiology is rapidly evolving in the healthcare industry with hospitals establishing medical microbiology labs, while the ecosystem is introducing specialized pharmaceutical lab, agriculture labs and water treatment systems to optimize the application of microbiology studies. Disease diagnosis, food composition, and green technologies are a few more examples of uses of microbiology in industry.
