Dr. Shaukat Hameed Khan
 
Dr. Shaukat Hameed Khan, a renowned scientist and educationist, has joined Center for Advanced Studies in Engineering (CASE) as Vice Chancellor (Designate) for “Sir Syed-CASE Institute of Technology”. Sir Syed-CASE Institute of Technology is a joint project of ‘Engineering Education Trust’ and ‘Sir Syed Memorial Society’.
 
Dr Shaukat possess nearly 40 years of experience in R&D, teaching, production, technical management and policy planning. He is a Fellow of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences. Dr Shaukat Hameed Khan previously worked for the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), where he retired as Chief Scientist (CS) in 2005. Twice he had served as Member, Planning Commission Government of Pakistan from Jan 2005-June 2008 and again from Feb-Sep 2009. He was associated with GIKI since its inception and served as a member of the Board of Governors. He also served as Rector GIKI and Executive Director of SOPREST (parent body of GIKI).
 
Dr. Shaukat has made numerous contributions to the field of lasers in Pakistan, having started the laser program in the PAEC, which has now grown into the National Institute of Lasers and Optronics (NILOP) with several hundred professionals, engaged in research teaching and production. He helped design the laser based position monitoring system for the massive CMS detector at CERN in Geneva, and forty laser systems designed and manufactured in his laboratory are installed at CERN. He was also a member of the Steering Committee on Higher Education set up by the President of Pakistan in 2002, which led to the establishment of the Higher Education Commission (HEC). He was the Project Director and principal author of a major foresight exercise – Vision 2030 - conducted by the Planning Commission in 2007. He has 28 publications in international journals and conferences.
 
Dr Shaukat was born in Lahore. He did his Senior Cambridge from St Mary’s School, Rawalpindi in 1957, FSc and BSc (Hons) from Gordon College, Rawalpindi in 1959, and 1961, topping the Bachelor’s list from Punjab University that year. In 1962, he won the Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University, UK, where he obtained his BSc Engineering degree in 1965 and DPhil in lasers in 1968.
 
CASE is a project of Engineering Education Trust (EET) and is one of the leading institutes in the field of Engineering and Technology and has one of the largest enrollments of post-graduate engineering students in the country.
